Day 5 (April 5th) - Calgary

I forgot to mention another interesting person at the Regina hostel. A pretty cool guy (another old guy), he was black and spoke with a bit of accent that I couldn’t place it from, named Max. His story was that he got divorced because his wife didn’t care about anything else but watching American Idol after work. LOL. It sounds funny but I did feel bad for him because he was a real nice guy and was struggling to find work and a place to rent. I wish all the best to him.

When I was getting to leave, the third old guy (named Ronald) had a vision of me last night where he couldn’t save me from a shark. Wait, the story gets more messed up. He tells me that he had killed a shark 180 miles long (with the support of various governments), and that he lost close friends to these huge sharks around the world. Afterwards he tells me not to be scared on judgement day. Umm…yeah. I was at a lost for words so I just mumbled “that’s cool”. Besides this weird tale, he did seem like a genuine good guy and normal. Anyways, I helped him carry his suitcase up the stairs and called a taxi for him and wished him the best of luck.

I finally got on the road and was excited to see Calgary. I was a bit surprised that I wasn’t as exhausted by the drive as yesterday. The drive was a bit different, heading towards Calgary, it seemed like I kept driving up a slight incline that went on for hundreds of kilometers - just climbing and climbing up. There were some cool storm clouds on my left. I also realized that there were plenty of gas stations to stop and fill up (despite my dad’s warning to be careful).

When I got to my hostel (which is kind of cool – I would recommend it to people) and checked in, I headed for Calgary Tower. The view was beautiful with the distant Rockies to the left, and the buildings light up nicely at night. I kind of preferred this view than the one from the CN Tower. I also met this guy there who was from Edmonton, who was a cool guy named Jeff (worked for the oil and gas industry). He pointed out to me all the places around the city and suggested places to see around here. I think next time I’m ever back here I’ll have to check out the Calgary Zoo, because they stick all the animals in the same enclosure (not separated).
